Chili Stews
Chili stews are the perfect food for those cold months that people are more homebound than in other times of the year. When everyone thinks of the word chili, they think a rich and meaty stew that is filled with a fiesta of rich and smoky flavors.
Like many stews, it can stand on its own as a main course, or it can be served as a soup, or with a side dish such as rice or bread. In its primary form, it's a stew dish with ingredients such as meat, bell peppers, cumin, garlic, and onion. The exact ingredients will vary according to region.
The history of chili stews originates in the southwest region of North America. Some people say that the stew was invented in Mexico during the 1840s. Many soldiers and settlers of the region ate pemmican to sustain their energy with grains, and proteins, since pemmican is made out of meat.
Somewhere along the way, chili took its place as a rich source of protein that would feed many people, and that last. As the dish found its way north to the U.S., the settlers made variations on the recipe. These variations depend upon the region, and what spices and resources were available, and popular.
For example, there is the traditional Texas recipe. In the early days, the traditional Texas style recipe contained only meat. The meat that was used was beef, buffalo, or other stew meats. The cook would cut into bite-size pieces which is still implemented today. Meat from cows was plentiful and inexpensive in the cattle towns of the southwest, and beef is still king in Texas to this day.
In time, as settlers moved to the east coast, the recipe changed to include beans and tomatoes. This was because beans and tomatoes were available in other areas. It was more economical to use beans and tomatoes in the recipe as it spread east into areas where beef was more expensive. This is how beans found their way into the recipe.
As times changed, home cooks loved putting their own spin on the chili stews. For example, there is a five alarm version of this dish. This was created in honor of the firemen who fixed this dish in their firehouses, because it stretches, it can feed many people, and it fills a person up.
\ When a fire is out of control, it's known as a five alarm fire. So when firemen altered the recipe, they added in so much spice, the taste was said to be out of control. Thus, the five alarm chili was created for those who are brave enough to eat it.
There are other ingredients, such as onions, and corn that are added in to many versions of this dish. Traditionally, the recipe calls for kidney beans. However, a person can use black beans, or pinto beans. These beans cook up wonderfully in chili stews, and they absorb the flavors and the spices very well.
The best time to serve this stew is during times that a cook would want to serve a dish that invokes comfort, and warmth. These are great party dishes for a movie night, or a sports gathering as well. Many people add extra delicious toppings, such as shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, avocado slices, and cilantro leaves. The best thing about this dish, is that it gets better with time. The next time you have leftovers, taste it the next few days, and see if it doesn't taste better every day!
